- Beckon
- summon with a wave, nod, or some other gesture.
- “...he beckons with his ladle to everyone that passes, and spoons him out a great dollop” (Remarque 1).
- It is never a good sign if a teacher has to beckon a student to his/her desk.
- Commotion
- a disorderly outburst or tumult.
- “I sit by Kemmerich’s bed. He is sinking steadily. Around us is great commotion” (Remarque 26).
- You can see students making a commotion in the halls whilst deciding who takes down the lunch trays by playing janken.
- Bellow
- make a loud noise, as of animal.
- “In the spasm of terror, under the hailing of annihilation, in the bellowing death of the explosions, O Earth, thou grantest us the great resisting surge of new-won life” (Remarque 55)
- Mr. Shaffer's bellowing voice is one of a kind.
- Essentially
- at bottom or by something's very nature.
- “In himself man is essentially a beast, only he butters it over like a slice of bread with a little decorum” (Remarque 44)
- It is essential for students to take a PE class for the first 4 years of Secondary School.
- Froth
- a mass of small bubbles formed in or on a liquid.
- “All my efforts subside like froth into the one desire to be able just to stay lying there” (Remarque 211)
- When you order a cappuccino, there is always froth on top of the coffee.
- Gape
- look with amazement.
- “Before me gapes the shell-hole” (Remarque 67).
- Although I am not proud to admit it, there will be a gaping hole in my shoes after a couple of weeks usage.
- Ghastly
- shockingly repellent; inspiring horror.
- “He looks ghastly, yellow and wan” (Remarque 14).
- Nearly every day, the boys locker room has a ghastly smell, making it unbearable to enter.
- Gigantic
- so exceedingly large or extensive as to suggest a giant.
- “The slide along it like gigantic tapering rulers” (Remarque 59).
- Ever since the kitchen staff changed, the L size has become gigantic.
- Hoist
- raise or haul up with or as if with mechanical help.
- “Kat hoists me up” (Remarque 91).
- When putting the bleachers back up on the stage, it requires more than 5 people to hoist up one.
- Nourish
- provide with sustenance.
- “Half an hour later every man had his tess-tin and we gathered at the cook-house. which smelt greasy and nourishing” (Remarque 3).
- I'm pretty sure it is safe to say that all high school students require good nourishment to survive the day.
- Skirmish
- a minor short-term fight.
- “After a while Mittelstaedt stops the skirmish and begins the very important exercise of creeping” (Remarque 177).
- PE dodgeball is just another term for a painful bouncy ball skirmish.
- Queue
- a line of people or vehicles waiting for something.
- “At the head of the queue of course were the hungriest” (Remarque 3).
- While trying to order food at 7-11, there will sometimes be a queue of people.
- Reluctantly
- with a certain degree of unwillingness.
- “I tread on Muller’s foot: reluctantly he puts the fine boots back again under the bed” (Remarque 17).
- Many high school students nowadays reluctantly go outside to play.
- Reverberate
- ring or echo with sound.
- "The roar of the guns make our lorry stagger, the reverberation rolls ragin' away to the rear, everything quakes” (Remarque 53).
- You can hear the voice of Mr. Shaffer reverberating through the hallways nearly every day.
- Haul
- the act of drawing something.
- “Then he hauls out a frying pan from under his coat, and a handful of salt as well as a lump of fat from his pocket” (Remarque 39).
- It is not a rare site to see students hauling a pencil from the bottom of their bags.
